MCGH to digitise national blood donor registry

A digitised national blood donor register will be introduced later this year to improve coordination between donors and recipients, Chief Executive Officer of Male’ City Group of Hospitals Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq has announced.

Speaking at a ceremony held to mark Blood Donor’s Day, Razzaq said a system has already been established to maintain a registry of thalassaemia patients through the OneGov portal. He said the decision to digitise the national blood donor register will make the process easier for both donors and recipients.

Razzaq further emphasised that government is expanding and improving thalassemia and blood-related healthcare services, including new facilities and treatments. He noted that a DNA laboratory was opened at the Thalassaemia Centre earlier in February and blood transfusion services now also available on Fridays. While endocrinology services were launched in July 2025, and haematology services, antigen typing, and bone marrow testing in August 2025, these are significant changes brought to the centre since its inception 35 years ago, he said.

The CEO highlighted blood donation as an act of compassion and social responsibility, and especially important in a Muslim-majority society. He thanked individual donors, private organisations, and resorts for supporting blood donation drives.

The government, under President Dr. Muizzu, is prioritising improved care and reliable blood supply for thalassaemia patients, who require regular transfusions.
