Imports rise to USD 356 million in May

The Maldives imported goods worth USD 356.8 million in May, up from USD 305 million in April, Maldives Customs Service has reported.

According to Customs statistics, the government earned around USD 20.9 million from import and export-related revenue in May.

In May, Oman was the largest source of imports at USD 71.3 million, followed by China with USD 51.6 million worth of imports from the country. India followed with imports worth USD 48.6 million.

Main import categories last month included oil and gas, worth USD 90.8 million, and food imports worth USD 61.5 million. Machinery and other goods accounted for USD 59.4 million.

While total exports in May stood at USD 6.36 million, the main export destination was the United Kingdom, with goods worth USD 2.33 million exported to the country. Thailand followed with exports worth USD 2.27 million, followed by France, receiving USD 389,000 worth of exports.
