Abdullah Sadiq, who won the by-election for the Hithadhoo North constituency, has been sworn in as a member of the Parliament.
At a special ceremony held, Sadiq took his oath of office before Supreme Court Judge Hussain Shahid. Following the ceremony, he signed the official declaration of office.
The Parliament seat for Hithadhoo North became vacant after a court ruling determined that Ahmed Sinan, who was elected to the constituency in 2024, had a proven debt. A by-election was subsequently held on 6 June, with Sodiq securing victory after receiving 1,375 votes.
Sadiq represents the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) in parliament. His election increases the party's representation in the parliament to 13 members. In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the MDP secured 12 seats.
Prior to entering parliament, Sadiq served as the first Mayor of Addu City and held the position for three terms. He also served as State Minister at the Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure during the previous administration.
The 20th Parliament consists of 93 members. Of these, 74 represent the People's National Congress (PNC), while 13 members now represent the MDP. The remaining members include two from the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), one from the Jumhooree Party (JP), one from the Maldives National Party (MNP), and two independent members.
