The participation of Maldivians in the global digital economy will expand alongside the integration of PayPal, Mohamed Saeed, the Minister of Economic Development, Transport and Trade, said at an Ooredoo Maldives ceremony marking the official commencement of the services.
The seamless integration eliminates a substantial barrier to digital economic participation, Minister Saeed noted, calling the milestone the culmination of efforts since President Dr Mohamed Muizzu assumed office on 17 November 2023. Strong leadership can yield tangible results, demonstrating that neither the small market nor geographic formation should cause the nation to fall behind, he added. Modernising the domestic financial framework within legal bounds was a stated directive of the president, Minister Saeed said, aiming to secure unhindered digital freedom, specifically empowering youth and women, while projecting Maldivian productivity worldwide.
Citizens have historically viewed PayPal as the definitive model, widely regarding it as the most needed solution whose vast global market share grants it unparalleled influence, Minister Saeed noted. While introducing international financial pathways was a central pledge in the presidential manifesto, dismantling barriers proved immensely challenging. Initial efforts over the first six months yielded no practically desirable results, necessitating fundamental strategic shifts.
A colossal network approaching half a billion active accounts does not enter a market without meticulous planning, Minister Saeed observed. Rather than seeking temporary fixes, the administration systematically navigated legal hurdles to build a strong framework and secure international-level trust. Operating upon this foundation, PayPal selected Ooredoo Maldives as its strategic partner to deliver this system directly to the Maldivian people, Minister Saeed added.
