The Ministry of Education and Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) on Wednesday signed a contract to recycle paper.
The contract was signed as part of WAMCO’s ongoing project aiming to encourage public to recycle used paper.
The agreement was signed by Education Minister Dr Aishath Shiham and Managing Director of WAMCO Ibrahim Fuad.
Speaking after signing the contract, Education Minister Dr Aishath Shiham said that schools throw away an estimated 442,000 books annually, which is approximately 150 tonnes of paper, and the agreement with WAMCO will help recycle and reuse the paper.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, WAMCO chairperson Ali Khalid said that the education curriculum has components which encourages recycling but it is rarely practiced in life. He said the agreement will change this by promoting the habit of recycling amongst students and staff of schools.
At the ceremony, WAMCO also handed over to the ministry paper recycling dustbins, donated by the Chinese Government.
