Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been awarded a contract by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to construct a 100-metre quay wall and carry out paving works at the new port development area in Thilafushi.
The agreement was signed by MPL’s Chief Executive Officer Captain Hussain Shafeeq and MTCC’s Managing Director DCP (Retd) Ahmed Saudi.
The project includes the construction of a 100-metre quay wall, and 6,775 square metres of paving works and related infrastructure. The area will initially be used for cargo clearance operations. Most sea cargo clearance operations currently handled at the Male’ Commercial Harbour and the Hulhumale’ International Terminal will be relocated to this area, easing current challenges in clearance operations.
However, after completion of the Thilafushi Port Development Project, the area will serve as a service quay for MPL vessels.
The quay wall component is valued at USD 1.17 million, while the total project cost, including the paving component and related infrastructure, is valued at USD 10 million. The project is expected to be completed within 120 days.
According to MPL, development work on the new international port at Thilafushi is progressing swiftly. MPL aims to open the port in November 2027 and transfer operations from the Male’ Commercial Harbour to the new facility.
Earlier this year, China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) was awarded the contract for the design and survey works of Phase I of the Thilafushi Port Development Project. MPL said the work is now nearing completion.
