President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has visited the road construction site on Bodu Thakurufaanu Magu to assess the ongoing development works.
He was accompanied by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) Managing Director Ahmed Saudee, Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed, and other MTCC officials.
The inspection comes as the road development project advances through Phase 1 of its three-segment implementation. Under the contract awarded to MTCC, the government is overseeing the comprehensive upgrade of this important route, which will see 700 metres of roadway tarred and developed to meet modern infrastructure standards.
During the site visit, President Muizzu received a detailed briefing from relevant officials regarding the current progress of the project and the timeline for upcoming phases. MTCC has confirmed that segments 1, 2, and 3 of the road will be tarred simultaneously, with asphalt laying operations scheduled to commence in June. The design approach for this phase aligns with the standards established during the development of the previous two segments, ensuring consistency.
The third segment of the road is expected to represent the most significant transformation for the surrounding area, as the section undergoes closure for comprehensive development. In addition to the road improvements, a substantial parking zone is being established to accommodate the demand for parking in one of the most busiest commercial areas of the capital. This area will provide parking space for 500 motorcycles, with the area created through dredging operations measuring around 98 metres in length and 28 metres in width from the harbour.
MTCC has set an ambitious target to complete all construction works and open the fully developed road to the public by July.
