Saudi Arabia has pledged to set up four micro-canneries in the Maldives.
The pledge was made during President Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia.
Briefing the media about the visit, Fisheries Minister Dr Mohamed Shainee said “the fish canneries will be established in four regions of the country.” “The micro-canneries will bring additional benefits to fisherman and provide higher prices for their catch,” he said.
He further said “the establishment of micro-canneries in four regions will help fishermen save on fuel costs as they do not have to deliver their catch to distant fish processing facilities.”
