ECM warns two political parties over divisive political activities

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has instructed two political parties not to conduct political activities in a manner that spreads hatred among the public or goes against social norms.

The parties issued with this notice are the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the People’s National Front (PNF).

In a statement released regarding the matter, the ECM noted that ongoing political activities carried out in Male’ by both the MDP and the PNF have involved speech and actions that contradict accepted social standards, incite hatred among the public, and encourage unrest. Therefore, the ECM has sent letters urging the parties to ensure their political activities are conducted within the boundaries of the law and regulations.

The letters further state that political activities must be carried out in accordance with the Freedom of Peaceful Assembly Act. The parties are also advised to ensure that their current activities and gatherings comply with legal and regulatory requirements. Additionally, the letters caution against making remarks about the personal lives of party leaders, members, or activists that violate ethical standards, and against spreading unverified or false information that could incite anger or hatred within society.

The ECM also advised against holding political gatherings or activities in public spaces such as streets and open areas without proper legal authorisation.

The Elections Commission stated that it welcomes political activities conducted within legal limits and has conveyed this message to the parties.

Recently, concerns have also been raised by members of the public regarding activities by political groups that appear to contradict social norms.
