PNC wins majority seats in runoff local council and WDC elections

In the second round of the Local Council Elections and Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, the ruling party, People's National Congress (PNC) secured 3 seats.

According to the results, out of the five seats contested in this round, PNC won three. The party secured the chairperson position of the Women’s Development Committee in Kelaa,Haa Alif Atoll, as well as member seats in Neykurendhoo, Haa Dhaal Atoll and Maavah in Laamu Atoll

Hawwa Fazna was elected as a member of the Kelaa WDC. Fathimath Riuza was elected as a member of the Neykurendhoo WDC, while Fathimath Shaafiya won a member seat in the Maavah WDC.

Additionally, Sheeza Ibrahim, who contested as an independent candidate, won the council seat for the Dhandimagu constituency in Fuvahmulah City. In Dhonfanu, Baa atoll the seat reserved for women in the council was won by MDP candidate Aiminath Rafah.

Voter turnout for this election reached 72 percent of eligible voters, which the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) noted as a significantly high participation rate compared to other elections.

The ECM also stated that no complaints were received regarding the voting process up until the closure of ballot boxes.
