Parliament’s role key in addressing conflict and injustice

Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla has said legislatures carry a significant responsibility in addressing global challenges such as instability, conflict and discrimination.

He made the remarks while addressing the 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Istanbul, Türkiye.

The theme of this year’s assembly is “Reviving Hope, Establishing Peace and Ensuring Justice for Future Generations.”

In his address, the Speaker emphasised the importance of empowering citizens, particularly youth and women, through access to education, healthcare and employment, as well as their inclusion in decision-making processes. He noted that legislatures play a crucial role in shaping laws, policies and budgets to meet public expectations.

He also stressed the importance of peace, dialogue and international cooperation, highlighting the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening relations between countries and maintaining global stability.

Drawing attention to the link between climate change and security, Abdul Raheem noted the disproportionate impact on small island developing states such as the Maldives. He called for increased international support and collective action to address climate-related risks.

The Speaker further stated that strong democratic institutions, accountable leadership, respect for human rights and the rule of law are essential to ensure a sustainable future.

He also highlighted initiatives to improve public participation in governance, including the introduction of an e-petition system to make parliamentary processes more accessible.

Expressing concern over escalating violence in the Middle East, he called for respect for ceasefire efforts and a peaceful resolution to ongoing conflicts.

Abdul Raheem concluded by reaffirming that the Maldives will continue to work with the international community to promote peace, justice and stability.
