Maldives’ imports rose 8 percent in August this year, Maldives Customs Service data showed Thursday.
“The CIF value of goods imported during August this year increased by 8 percent compared to the same month last year. Approximately MVR2.7 billion worth of goods were imported during August 2015, whereas this year the figure was recorded at MVR 2.9 billion,” according to the customs.
Customs data showed that the total revenue collected through customs duty and other fees and fines during August 2016 showed a 7 percent decline compared to that of August 2015.
A total of MVR 209.8 million was collected through Customs duty last month, the customs said, however, the FOB value of goods exported during last month fell by 18 percent to that of the same period last year, which is a drop from MVR 210 million in August 2015 to MVR 172 million in August 2016.
“Even though the overall export value decreased, there was a positive growth of fish exports during last month compared to the value of exports in the month of June and July this year,” the customs said.
