Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced plans to significantly expand and formalise Maldives’ system of Islamic endowments, or Awqaf, as part of a broader effort to reinforce the country’s religious and institutional framework.
In a statement issued following his appointment, Minister Shaheem, said Awqaf would be developed into a key institutional pillar contributing to the nation’s Islamic heritage.
He outlined plans to broaden Awqaf initiatives nationwide, strengthen governance structures, and establish a comprehensive management system. Work is also under way to introduce dedicated legislation aimed at ensuring Awqaf operates as a structured and impactful component of the country’s Islamic framework. Minister Shaheem added that his ministry would work to realise the vision set out by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, describing the development of Awqaf as a priority that would be pursued “with dedication and with the blessings of Allah”.
President Dr Muizzu formally renamed the Ministry of Islamic Affairs as the Ministry of Islamic Affairs and Endowments, signalling an increased focus on the sector.
