Flydubai to launch cargo flights to Maldives this month

Flydubai is set to launch cargo flights to the Maldives this month, operating a temporary service aimed at supporting the movement of goods into the country.

The Dubai-based airline will operate cargo-in-cabin flights, a method not commonly used but previously deployed by some carriers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Managing Director of Ace Aviation Services, Flydubai’s agent in the Maldives, Mohamed Firag, said the flights are scheduled to begin on 16 April and will continue until 29 April.

The service will operate between Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai and Velana International Airport in Malé.

The initiative comes as part of broader government efforts to address supply chain challenges. Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said work to clear containers stranded at regional ports is progressing rapidly, with additional measures being implemented to ensure the steady flow of goods.

As of 8 April, a total of 4,241 containers were awaiting clearance, though this figure has since been significantly reduced. Authorities are continuing efforts to bring goods into the Maldives through both air and sea freight to stabilise supply.
