The final, certified results of the triple elections held on 4 April will be announced at a press conference on Sunday, the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has confirmed.
The nationwide polls, among the largest electoral exercises in the country’s history, included local council elections, women’s development committee elections and a national referendum on whether to hold future presidential and parliamentary elections on the same day.
While provisional results have already been published on the ECM’s website, the final tally is still pending. The commission said ballot boxes subject to complaints are currently under review, with a full recount to be conducted before the results are officially certified and released.
The elections also marked a significant milestone, recording the highest voter turnout in a local council election to date. Of the 294,876 eligible voters, 73 per cent participated in the polls, reflecting strong civic engagement across the country.
In the 4 April elections, voters elected 626 councillors to island councils and 52 councillors to city councils.
Following the announcement of final results, the swearing-in ceremony for newly elected councillors is scheduled for 17 May. The Local Government Authority has begun preparations for the event, which will also include the oath-taking of members elected to women’s development committees in a joint ceremony.
