Ministry of Housing and Infrastructure on Wednesday announced that a megaproject to redevelop the roads of Male’ City would commence on October 1.
The project will see the redevelopment of 13 major roads in Malé City, including Majeedhee Magu, the main thoroughfare.
Malé City, less than 6 kilometres in size, is one of the most congested capital cities in the world. It is often described by writers as “the concrete jungle” of Asia. Small, high rise concrete buildings are erected one next to the other, where nearly half of the country’s population reside.
In the ongoing efforts to revamp the cityscape of Malé City, the government on Wednesday announced the work schedule for the redevelopment of the city’s roads.
“Work to acquire machinery and recruit workers for the project is nearing completion, and necessary surveys have been conducted,” the Ministry said.
Male’ being the capital city of Maldives has the busiest roads in the country. Under the project, damaged roads will be resurfaced and a proper drainage system will be installed to prevent flooding caused by heavy rain.
According to the Ministry, the roads to be revamped under the project are; Majeedhee Magu, Lily Magu, Ameenee Magu, Kambaa Aisaa Rani Hingun, Chaandhanee Magu, Orchid Magu, Lonuziyaaraiiy Magu, Haveeree Hingun, Handhuvaree Hingun, Ameeru Ahmed Magu, Buruzu Magu, and Izzuddin Magu.
As per the work schedule, Majeedhee Magu will be the first road to get a makeover and it will be completed by February 4th.
Under the project, the government also plans to establish a fire hydrant mechanism and ease access to roads for people with disabilities.
The project, which is expected to be completed in September 2018, will alleviate difficulties faced by pedestrians and motorists, and make the roads more accessible and safe for everyone, the Ministry said.
