Dharavandhoo airport development to modernise services

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has said the new terminal planned for Dharavandhoo Airport will expand services and modernise the facility.

Speaking at a ceremony held to launch the terminal development, the minister said the project is expected to boost economic activity in Baa Atoll and strengthen the transport network, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s development vision.

The minister noted that Baa Atoll has strong tourism potential, including its designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. While the atoll is internationally recognised, he said residents can fully benefit from tourism only if adequate infrastructure and facilities are in place.

Describing the airport as a key hub for both tourists visiting the atoll and local residents, and one that handles a high volume of domestic flights, the minister said the existing terminal is outdated and requires upgrading. He added that the new terminal will double capacity and enhance passenger experience through modern facilities.

The government aims to make domestic air travel faster, easier and more efficient. The minister also noted that operational changes are expected once the airport’s management is transferred to Island Aviation Services Limited (IASL).
