WMO & MMS hold workshop on disaster risk reduction

The World Meteorological Organisation, WMO in partnership with Maldives Meteorological Service on Monday commenced a disaster prevention and mitigation workshop in the Maldives.

The Stakeholders Meeting to Initiate the Implementation of Impact Based Forecasting and Risk Based Warning in Maldives was officially launched by Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the workshop, Minister Thoriq said “meteorological service in the Maldives has been improving rapidly since the establishment of the meteorological service centre in 1942.”

He said “the Met Office currently has the capability to forecast the weather and natural disasters with help of various centres across the country.”

According to UN’s social and economic council for Asia Pacific disaster report, 40% of all natural disasters taken place across the world during 2005 to 2014 were in the Asia Pacific region where the Maldives is located.
