New phase of Boduthakurufaanu Magu project underway near Henveiru Ferry Terminal

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced quay wall construction as part of a sweeping initiative to modernise Boduthakurufaanu Magu, a project poised to redefine the capital’s coastal infrastructure.

Preliminary work is centred on the demolition and removal of existing concrete structures near the jetty adjacent to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal. This operation represents the third component of a broader urban renewal scheme, specifically targeting Segments 2 through 5 of the project’s inaugural phase. The designated construction zone extends 700 metres from Izzuddin Jetty to the Henveiru Ferry Terminal; within this corridor, 610 metres of the quay wall will undergo total renewal, the company stated.

The restoration of the cross seawall, a vital berthing area for marine vessels, stretches toward Fishermen’s Park, where sheet piling is now underway. These subterranean reinforcements serve as the foundation for a significant widening of the thoroughfare, with the road expected to expand by an estimated two to three metres.

The MTCC is executing these works according to the design framework established during the successful completion of the project’s first two segments. Upon completion of the structural reinforcements, the infrastructure will be finished with modern asphalt surfacing, a comprehensive drainage system, new pedestrian pavements, and the installation of street lighting.

While this extensive redevelopment transforms the waterfront, authorities confirmed that the area encompassing Fishermen’s Park will remain unchanged for the duration of this phase. To date, the overarching Boduthakurufaanu Magu initiative has successfully modernised a 380-metre stretch reaching from Izzuddin Jetty to the North Harbour.
