Maamendhoo roads development commences

The modernisation of roads in Maamendhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, has officially begun, with work commencing on 24 March.

The contract to develop the roads has been awarded to the Road Development Corporation (RDC).

A special ceremony was held in Maamendhoo to mark the start of the project. The Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, inaugurated the works. The ceremony was attended by State Minister Muhuthaz Muhusin, Gaafu Alifu Atoll Council President Ibrahim Shaheen, Parliamentarian for Kolamaafushi Ibrahim Deedi, RDC Managing Director Ibrahim Nazeem and Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Nabeeh Afeef.

The RDC was awarded the contract for the modernisation of roads in Maamendhoo in August 2023. The project was contracted at a cost of approximately USD 8.9 million. The work is being carried out on a design-and-build basis and is scheduled to be completed within 730 days.

Under the project, 11 roads covering a total length of 5.47 kilometres will be paved. The works will also include the installation of drainage systems and street lighting.

Road conditions in many islands across the atoll remain difficult for residents, particularly for pedestrians. Addressing these concerns has been a key issue raised by local communities.
