Eydhafushi draws up land use plan for reclaimed area

Shortage of land remains one of the major problems facing Eydhafushi Island of Baa Atoll.

With the rapid increase in the island’s population over the years, land has become scarce and the demand for housing plots is growing by the day.

Eydhafushi, the administrative and commercial hub of Baa Atoll, has seen rapid population growth over the years. One of the main concerns of the island’s 3000 plus population is shortage of housing land.

According to Eydhafushi Council, it has been around 30 years since the island last issued land plots for residential purposes. Eydhafushi Council President Nazneena Yusuf said “residents have been applying for land plots, but there is not enough land.” The council said it had received over one thousand applications.

The Government has reclaimed 26 hectares to address the issue, and the council and the Housing Ministry are currently working to draw up a land use plan for the reclaimed area.

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said “the land will be put to its best use after consulting with the residents.”

Eydhafushi Council said “plots will be allocated for building apartment complexes under the land use plan, and expressed hope that it will ease housing problems faced by island residents.”

Some residents who spoke to PSM News said many people are facing immense difficulties as they have to live with extended families. They say many are in desperate need of housing plots.
