Maldives distributes record USD 389 per capita Fitr Zakat

The Zakat House has successfully distributed a record USD 389 per head as Zakat al-Fitr to all registered poor and needy individuals this Ramadan.

This marks the highest per capita disbursement of Zakat al-Fitr in the nation's history, reflecting both increased public contributions and enhanced distribution efficiency.

A total of USD 901,167 has been allocated for distribution from the record-breaking collection of over USD 907,911—the largest sum received to date. The beneficiaries include 62 underprivileged orphans, who were formally included in the eligible categories for Zakat disbursement this year.

The Zakat House credited the success to the expanded use of digital platforms, with seven online systems facilitating seamless Zakat payments. Special arrangements were made to assist individuals facing difficulties with digital transactions, allowing them to deposit cash through island councils. Physical collection points at the Islamic Centre also accepted cash, cash cards, and even grain—honouring traditional forms of Zakat. Contributions in grain were either distributed directly to recipients or, where surplus, donated to state-supported welfare programmes.

Due to the digitised monitoring system, Zakat House was able to track collections in real time and ensure equitable distribution across all atolls, reaching every eligible individual on the national registry before the Eid prayers.

Zakat al-Fitr, obligatory for all Muslims, is intended for those in need of financial assistance after the Holy month of Ramadan. It is mandated in the second year of Hijra and applies to all members of the Muslim community, regardless of age or status. However, certain conditions must be met, including having enough funds to provide for dependents with food and basic essentials on the day and night of Eid.
