Fonadhoo Island of Laamu Atoll has officially inaugurated its water supply network project. The project was inaugurated by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, Defense Minister Adam Shareef Umar, Fonadhoo MP Abdul Raheem Abdulla and Villimalé MP Ahmed Nihan Hussein Manik.

The project to design and build the water supply system of Fonadhoo Island of Laamu Atoll is assigned to Sierra Maldives Pvt. Ltd., for a cost of MVR 47 million. Sierra Maldives Pvt. Ltd is a subsidiary company of Sierra Construction Pvt. Ltd. of Sri Lanka.

Speaking after inaugurating the project, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stressed that the Government highly prioritises the development of the atolls. He noted that developmental projects undertaken by the Government in Laamu Atoll alone proves that the Government’s development plans are not solely concentrated on Malé City.

Fonadhoo Island Council said shortage of safe drinking water is one of the major concerns of the over 3,000 residents, and those recently migrated to the island from Gaadhoo. Fonadhoo Council President Ahmed Riyaz said the island’s freshwater lens had been contaminated following the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

According to the Environment Ministry, the Government-funded project is set to be completed within one-year from the initiation date.
