Transport Authority of Maldives (TAM) Tuesday commenced stakeholder discussions on making it compulsory for two-wheeler riders to wear helmets.
The authority said it initiated the discussions due to the importance of such a measure.
Many countries obligate the use of helmets on two-wheelers while numerous studies and statistics attribute most fatal accidents to be caused due to severe head injuries.
Speaking to PSM, Chairman at the Transport Authority, Abdu Rasheed Naafiz said that “previously, the use of helmets had been mandated by law in the Maldives, but was later changed due to public concerns.”
Even though the current regulation does not require riders of two wheelers to wear helmets, TAM advises them to wear the protective headgear as a safety precaution, he added.
