President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced a comprehensive financial relief package for residents of the Sinamalé and Malé Hiya public housing complexes in the Galolhu district, aimed at easing financial burdens and addressing long-standing structural deterioration.
The announcement followed a meeting held at Mulee Aage, where residents raised concerns over worsening infrastructure, mounting rental obligations, and accumulated penalties. The President acknowledged the grievances, emphasising the government’s duty to intervene following years of neglect.
Under the relief measures, all fines accrued due to non-payment will be fully waived. In addition, a relief allowance of USD 6,484.52 has been authorised for unit owners in Sinamalé 1–4 and Malé Hiya 1–2.
The administration has structured the assistance based on individual debt levels. For owners whose outstanding balances exceed USD 6,484.52, the allowance will be deducted from their total debt. If the outstanding amount is less than the allocated relief, the debt will be fully cleared and the remaining balance deposited directly into the resident’s bank account. Homeowners who have already completed payments and secured ownership will receive the full allowance credited to their accounts.
The President’s Office stated that the dialogue reflects efforts to align policy decisions with public concerns, noting that broader measures are under consideration to improve living standards and strengthen social welfare. Authorities acknowledged that the deteriorating condition of the housing complexes has been a significant source of distress, prompting a commitment to redevelopment under established regulatory guidelines.
The decision follows earlier stalled efforts to rehabilitate the buildings. Repair initiatives launched during President Muizzu’s tenure as Mayor of Malé City did not progress due to lack of institutional coordination at the time. The executive order to waive fines and provide financial assistance was formalised on 5 January, with implementation directives issued to the Malé City Council on 7 January.
