First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has inaugurated the indoor gym developed by the Women's Development Committee (WDC) of Kudahuvadhoo, Dhaalu Atoll.
The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation, Abdulla Rafiu; Member of Parliament for Kudahuvadhoo constituency, Hussain Hameed; members of the Kudahuvadhoo Island Council and the WDC; and a large number of island residents.
Speaking at the ceremony held at the Ekuveri WDC Building on Kudahuvadhoo, the First Lady highlighted the importance of staying physically active to maintain good health and protect against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), noting that the establishment of such a facility on the island would be a significant boost towards achieving these goals.
Describing the gym inaugration as an important step towards promoting public health on the island, the First Lady expressed her hope that all residents would make full use of this facility. She praised the WDC's initiative and encouraged other such committees across the nation to follow their example, acknowledging the vital role they play and commending their dedicated efforts.
She highlighted the Government's commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of citizens, commending President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's policies and initiatives in advancing public health and creating an environment that protects people from disease. She noted that these efforts had earned the President a place among TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in Health for 2026, with particular mention of the tobacco control measures implemented under his leadership.
