Building accropodes for the bridge

The Housing Ministry on Friday said work to build the concrete block revetment system of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge is expected to commence this September. The design drawings of the China-Maldives Friendship Bridge show a revetment system protecting the bridge sites in Malé and Hulhulé. The first part to be developed under the project would be the revetment system near Hulhulé.

According to the Housing Ministry, the revetment system would be built using concrete “accropode” blocks. They are unreinforced concrete objects designed to resist the action of waves on breakwaters and coastal structures, and would be the biggest such concrete blocks built in the country so far. The contractor of the bridge project, China’s CCCC Second Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. is currently making preparations to the build the concrete blocks, in Hulhulé.

“A separate land plot was assigned to [the company] in Hulhulé to carry out work on building the accropodes,” Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said. “It is an additional land plot assigned to the bridge site in Hulhulé. The company is currently preparing to begin work on the revetment blocks,” he added.

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said work on the accropodes are a major component of the approach-bridge being built on the Hulhulé end. He further said work on other components of the bridge project are progressing swiftly. The Ministry said work on building the trestle bridge is also nearing completion, in addition to work on the pillars of the bridge.
