Gan Airport expansion project to be completed by October

Addu International Airport Private Limited says project to expand the runway of Gan International Airport will be completed and the runway officially opened during next October.

The project to expand the runway of Gan International Airport will see the existing runway increased to 3400 meters in length and 59 meters in width.

The current runway at Gan International Airport is 2200 meters long.

The project to develop Gan Airport is carried out under 2 phases. The first phase of the project saw land reclamation of the airport, in order to expand the runway. 960 meters will be added to the area of the Gan airport after the project is completed.

Addu international Airport says once complete the airport will be able to accommodate larger aircraft such as the Boeing 777.

Speaking to PSM about the airport development project General Manager at the Addu International Airport Private Limited Ibthishama Ahmed Saeed said construction work of the runway has been completed. She said currently final preparations are underway to officially open the expanded runway.

Addu International Airport says that they are now working to acquire ground handling equipment required for the new runway.

The project to develop Gan International airport will cost approximately 60 Million Dollars. The airport says the expansion project is carried out to accommodate the rising demand and increase in number of passengers using the airport.  

Addu International Airport Private Limited is also working on developing a hotel in Gan.
