President reaffirms close Maldives–Sri Lanka ties

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the close and enduring relationship between the Maldives and Sri Lanka as he extended Independence Day greetings to Sri Lanka’s President and Prime Minister.

President Muizzu sent messages to President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka and Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya on the occasion of the 78th Anniversary of Independence of the Sri Lanka.

In his letter to President Dissanayaka, President Muizzu noted that the anniversary comes at a time when Sri Lanka continues to demonstrate resilience in its pursuit of economic stability, social harmony, and national progress. He highlighted the long-standing friendship between the two countries, strengthened through decades of cooperation and shared regional priorities.

In his message to Prime Minister Amarasuriya, the President acknowledged the strong history of bilateral cooperation and expressed confidence that the partnership would continue to deepen, particularly in areas such as trade, development, and regional stability.

The President also extended personal wishes for the good health and wellbeing of both leaders, and for continued peace, progress, and prosperity for the people of Sri Lanka.

In a separate message posted on his official X account, President Muizzu highlighted the centuries-old ties between the two countries, describing Sri Lanka as one of the Maldives’ closest and most trusted partners.

Sri Lanka’s Independence Day is observed annually on 4 February, marking the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1948.
