Laamu Farmers Development Cooperative Society (LFDCS) has begun distributing garbage bins to households in Fonadhoo Island of Laamu Atoll as part of the efforts to establish a proper waste management mechanism in the island.
The cooperative society is tasked with all waste management related work in Fonadhoo, including garbage collection, transport and disposal.
LFDCS said it had formulated an extensive waste management plan for the island with assistance from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
According to LFDCS, 1500 garbage bins will be provided to registered households under the plan, with instructions to sort biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste.
