The Department of Judicial Administration – DJA has announced projects worth MVR16 million to expand court infrastructure in the atolls.
The projects are expected to ease space constraints faced by magistrate courts, the department said.
According to DJA, projects to expand court infrastructure have been launched in fifteen islands so far this year. While most of the projects are nearing completion, the department expects that the buildings will be ready for move in by the end of this year.
Each of the 15 buildings constructed under the projects will include a court room, an administrative corridor, and a waiting area, DJA said.
The department said “it attaches high priority to expand court infrastructure in the atolls due to the rapid increase in the number of cases filed with these courts.”
According to DJA, new court buildings were constructed in 26 islands in 2015.
191 magistrate courts are currently in operation across the country’s 20 administrative atolls.
