Land reclamation work commences at Vihafaru

Land reclamation work has commenced at Vihafaru, Noonu Atoll as part of an endeavor to develop an airport. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was in attendance for the launch of this project.

Minister of Economic Development, Mohamed Saeed initiated the practical works for the land reclamation project. The project has been contracted to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).

A total of 42 hectares is scheduled to be reclaimed at Vihafaru for the airport development. The airport will be developed with a 1,500-meter runway, as such the land reclamation work will be completed with a 1.6-meter elevation. To add to this, terminal apron and facilities for the airport operations will also be developed.

The airport development project was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu last year, during his community outreach to Holhudhoo, Noonu atoll while speaking to the island residents.

While highlighting the importance of a airport for the residents of Holhudhoo, Velidhoo and Fohdhoo of Noonu Atoll, the President said an airport in that location is a requirement within the government’s broader development plan for the nation. As such a decision was made to develop an airport in Vihafaru, located near Velidhoo.

The President said that practical work will begin early this year, as such the commencement of the land reclamation project is a fulfillment of President Dr Muizzu pledge to the island residents. The President also stated that the project will be completed within two years.
