Thalassemia allowance now available for registered patients in Maldives

The Thalassemia and Other Hemoglobinopathies Centre has announced that financial assistance will be provided to individuals registered with the Thalassemia Centre, as part of government efforts to support patients with the condition.

Dr Mariyam Joodha Rasheed, speaking on behalf of the center, confirmed that 651 registered patients at the Maldivian Blood Services Thalassemia Center will receive the allowance this month. The payments are governed by the Thalassemia Control Act, which stipulates that eligibility is contingent upon registration with the center.

Dr Joodha clarified that while all currently registered patients under the Male’ City Group of Hospitals (MCGH) will qualify, they must first submit an application to access the allowance. The regulations specify that even if a patient’s condition improves temporarily but later relapses, they must reapply for financial support. The agency will process applications within one month of submission.

Applications must be made through the OneGov online portal using the eFaas digital identification, with the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) coordinating disbursements alongside the Thalassemia Center. Parents or guardians of children under 18 must provide relevant details during the application process, and previously registered patients are urged to update their information.

The deadline for this month’s allowance is midnight on 22 January, though future applications—starting in February—can be submitted by the 15th of each month.

The initiative, rolledout under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, aims to enhance thalassemia treatment and improve patients' quality of life. Additionally, the government has established the new Maldivian Blood Services facility in Hulhumale’ and is developing a specialised thalassemia hospital to further strengthen care for affected individuals.
