Rainwater tanks are being installed in Fainu Island of Raa Atoll under the government’s initiative to provide safe drinking water, Fainu Council said Saturday.
It said that under the project, 10 tanks of 5,000 litre each, will be installed in the island, and that the completion of the project to install water tanks will bring an end to the issue of water shortage in the island with a population of 446.
Fainu Council President Ibrahim Nasir said that “shortage of drinking water has been a pressing concern for the residents. [The island] has been continuously facing the issue during the dry season every year”. Highlighting the severity of the concern, Nasir added that “the island has faced the issue on 2 separate occasions last year”.
The existing rainwater tanks in Fainu has a capacity of almost 17,000 litres, while the council informs that, with the completion of the ongoing project, the capacity of water collection will increase to 70,000 litres Shortage of drinking water is a major issue in some islands during the dry season.
