Development of housing units in Thinadhoo completed

Housing units developed in Thinadhoo Island, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, under the Government’s Social Housing programme have been completed.

120 housing units were developed in Thinadhoo, which is one of the main population centres in the south of the country.

Housing Minister Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said work was now underway to evaluate applications for the housing units.

“[The Ministry] is working to ensure agreements are completed with the recipients before they move in,” he said.

Vice President of Thinadhoo Council Ibrahim Assad said they received over 800 application forms for the housing units.

The island has a population of 7,523 and over 3,000 residents who have migrated from other islands.

According to Thinadhoo Council, of the 120 housing units developed in the island, 80 are designated for Thinadhoo residents.

25 housing units are allotted for people who migrated to the island, while the rest would be sold through open bidding.

Thinadhoo is one of the islands which is seeing numerous developmental projects, including a road project, in addition to a land reclamation project which saw the expansion of the island’s land area from 113 hectares to 167 hectares.
