‘Green Nursery’ development commences in Hulhumale’

The ‘Green Nursery’ to be built in Hulhumale’ under the government 5 Million Tree Planting Programme has commenced development.

On a post on social media, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment (MoTE) has reiterated that this development project is being carried out in association with Housing Development Corporation (HDC). This initiative is a grant aid by the Peoples Republic of China, signifying the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.

An agreement was signed between MoTE and HDC for this project earlier in May of 2025, with the plot has now handed over to China Harbour Engineering Company for development.

This 55,000 sqft nursery aims to propagate and monitor trees necessary to enhance greenery and create an eco-friendly environment in Hulhumale’. Trees brought in from overseas will be grown until the desired size is reached before being transported to various islands. Additionally, the training and deployment of specialised nursery workers is another aim of this project.

Furthermore, MoTE has stated that trees will be cultivated in the nursery under HDC supervision well beyond the completion of the 5 million tree initiative, ensuring long-term benefits.

The construction of this nursery is part of the 5 Million Tree Planting Program initiated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, which seeks to restore native plant populations and contribute to environmental restoration, establishing a greener, healthier environment for future generations.
