Government announces job programme for recovering addicts

The Government on Sunday announced plans to provide employment opportunities for recovering addicts undergoing rehabilitation.

The announcement was made by Vice President Abdulla Jihad, at a press conference held by the Cabinet’s Social Council.

He said members of the council recently visited drug rehabilitation centres, half-way houses and community centres to evaluate the situation.

He said the main request of addicts undergoing rehabilitation at the facilities is assistance in seeking employment.

Jihad said the council had held discussions regarding the matter with relevant government offices, and state-owned and private companies, including Maldives Association of Tourism Industries (MATI) and Maldives Association of Construction Industries (MACI).

Noting that the discussions yielded positive results, Jihad announced that work to provide job opportunities for those undergoing drug rehabilitation would commence soon.
