Tsunami tragedy turned into a symbol of unity, says Former President

Former President of the Maldives Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom has stated that the 2004 tsunami tragedy became a powerful symbol of strong unity and solidarity among the Maldivian people in the aftermath of the disaster.

In a social media post on the anniversary of the tsunami, the former president recalled memories of the tragedy and extended National Unity Day greetings to the public. He said the tragedy displayed the deep bonds and unity among the people of the Maldives.

The tsunami struck while Maumoon was serving as president. The care, compassion and assistance shown to those affected by the tragedy stand as a beautiful example of the Maldivian values and culture. Shortly after the disaster struck, government agencies, the military and the police began coordinated efforts to deliver urgent relief to victims.

Donation drives were launched soon after, enabling the provision of drinking water, medicine, food, clothing and other essential supplies, mobilised within a short time.

Since 2005, 26 December has been observed annually to commemorate the unity and solidarity shown by the people of Maldives in response to the tsunami disaster.
