Police seek charges against 34 suspects arrested in nationwide drug crackdown

Maldives Police Service (MPS) have submitted the cases of 34 individuals arrested under Operation Alimagu, a nationwide anti-narcotics initiative, to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO) for prosecution.

So far, 193 suspects—186 men and seven women—have been detained in the operation, which has targeted 39 islands and involved searches of 166 locations, as well as nine land vehicles and one marine vessel.

Chief Inspector of Police Fathih Mohamed, leading the counter-narcotics division, confirmed that 30.63 kg of illegal substances have been seized since the operation's launch.

A joint effort between the Police Narcotics Bureau and Intelligence, Operation Alimagu aims to curb drug trafficking and promote a drug-free society.

MPS report strong collaboration among government and enforcement agencies, though challenges remain in prosecuting cases effectively. With drug seizures on the rise, stakeholders continue working to address legal obstacles and strengthen judicial outcomes in the ongoing fight against narcotics.
