HRCM Reiterates Core Mission for Rights Protection on Human Rights Day Anniversary

On the occasion of the 77th International Human Rights Day, the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) has reaffirmed its core mission to foster an environment where fundamental rights are universally guaranteed and seamlessly integrated into the fabric of Maldivian society.

This year’s global theme, "Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials," resonated strongly with the Commission's message.

Highlighting the significance of the theme, the HRCM stated its purpose is to illuminate that human rights are not abstract concepts, but essential foundations for every single day. The Commission underscored that while rights might seem inherently important or even commonplace, they are the vital, basic necessities upon which individuals rely constantly for a dignified existence.

Beyond recognition, the HRCM stressed the crucial need for collective action. The ultimate goal, according to the Commission, is to build a society free from discrimination and based on equality. This requires persistent efforts to create awareness, maintain confidence and encourage everyone to work together to respect each other's rights.
Achieving this, the HRCM stated, necessitates that its services become as accessible as possible and that it works extensively to ensure an environment where rights are guaranteed.

10 December marks both the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted in 1948 and the 22nd anniversary of the HRCM's own inception.
