Indonesia marks 71st Independence Day

A special function has been held Monday evening in Malé to celebrate the 71st Independence Day of Indonesia.

Bilateral relations were established between the two countries over 42 years ago, and this is the first time Indonesian Independence Day is celebrated here in the Maldives.

The function held at Hotel Jen Monday evening was honoured by the presence of Foreign Minister Dr. Mohamed Asim. Addressing the function, Dr. Asim noted that Indonesia was one of the countries which recognised Maldives following its independence, and noted the importance of strengthening relations between the two countries.

Highlighting the close trade relations between the two countries, he noted that Indonesia is one of the top providers of timber and other raw materials for resort development projects in the Maldives. He noted that imports from Indonesia totalled over MVR 300 million in the January to June period. He further noted a visa agreement between the two countries, issuing 30-day on-arrival tourist visas to Maldivian travellers, and said such arrangements allow the strengthening of socio-economic ties between the two nations.
