A seminar on Port State Control Inspection for port officials began in the Maldives on Sunday.
The international seminar is organized by Maldives Transport Authority in collaboration with Indian Ocean Maritime Organization.
Experts from Maldives, Mauritius, Oman and India are attending the seminar.
Organisers said during the seminar they would inform participants of ways to apply international conventions and regulations in supervising and monitoring safety and security standards established onboard ships which port in the respective countries.
Furthermore, the seminar will focus on informing participants on ensuring such vessels comply with maritime and environment related laws.
Deputy Director of Transport Authority, Ibrahim Yasir described the seminar as very important to the country.
Such seminars could assist local authorities in preventing large vessels running aground and damaging coral reefs, he added.
