The High Commission of Maldives in Sri Lanka has initiated urgent relief efforts, providing essential food items and water to Maldivian citizens severely impacted by the recent devastation caused by Cyclone Ditwa.
The proactive measure comes as Sri Lanka grapples with widespread flooding and disruptions across the island nation.
A dedicated special call centre has been established to streamline reports from those requiring assistance, enabling the High Commission to closely monitor the evolving situation.
The High Commission has also begun providing aid to those who have requested it, delivering food and water to Maldivians across various parts of Sri Lanka, adding that assistance is also being extended to Maldivian students in Colombo and other affected areas.
Beyond residents and students, the High Commission is actively working to identify and aid Maldivian nationals stranded at Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport following numerous flight cancellations.
In a display of solidarity, the High Commission also announced its preparations to extend humanitarian assistance to local victims, who are battling extensive flood damage.
In light of the hazardous conditions, the High Commission has issued a critical advisory to its citizens, urging them to avoid non-essential travel, particularly in areas prone to floods and landslides, and to remain indoors during heavy rains and strong winds.
