President Muizzu Confirms Villimale’ Housing Project for Residents, Announces Major Development

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that the 300 housing units to be developed in Villimale’ will be allocated exclusively to residents of the ward.

Speaking at a meeting with Villimale’ residents, the President reiterated his commitment to fulfilling his election promises, and highlighted his pledge to address housing shortages. To address this, the construction of 300 three-bedroom apartments will begin this year, he said, adding that the funds for the project have already been secured.

The government has also decided to demolish the existing hospital in Villimale’ and replace it with a new 100-bed facility, fully funded and constructed under Chinese government assistance. During Sunday’s meeting, the President said that the services of the current hospital will be temporarily relocated to a building previously housing the children’s shelter Amaan Hiyaa. The renovation of the building was handed over to the Road Development Corporation (RDC) earlier the same day.

During the meeting, the President assured that China's assistance will also be utilised to modernise the roads in Villimale’. The project will also improve the ward’s water and sewerage system, he said.

The President announced that the Villimale’ Sports Complex is set to begin construction next year. The complex will feature indoor courts and a 1,200-seat arena, while the ward’s football field will also be upgraded to a FIFA-grade stadium.

President Muizzu also announced that a Bank of Maldives (BML) US Dollar ATM will be installed in Villimale’, as part of the government’s plan to establish US Dollar ATMs in all islands with a population of over 2,000. Under these efforts, seventy ATMs are expected to be established by next March.

Earlier on Sunday, the development of a modern two-storey mosque in Villimale’, with a capacity of 850 people, classrooms, and an office, was contracted to the Fiya Foundation. The mosque will be built on the site of the current Masjid As-Salam, funded by the foundation.
