Fenaka Invests in Over 90 New Generators to Boost Capacity in Atolls

Fenaka Corporation Limited, the primary utility provider serving 157 islands across the Maldives, has significantly ramped up efforts to boost power generation and connectivity nationwide, according to Managing Director Mohamed Najah.

Speaking to PSM News' ‘Hafthaa 104’ programme to mark the second anniversary of the incumbent government, Najah revealed that 93 new generators have been dispatched to various islands within the last two years to alleviate capacity constraints and address persistent power outage issues.

The massive influx of new infrastructure is central to the state-owned company’s strategy for strengthening services. Of the 93 units, 57 generators were shipped in 2024, with an additional 36 delivered this year. Additionally, Fenaka is proactively preparing for upcoming peak demand, announcing plans to deploy 48 more generators in anticipation of increased usage during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan.

"We are not only bringing in generators," Najah emphasised, highlighting the dual focus on maintenance.

"Some people might think that, but we are also working on overhauling existing generators. We have overhauled 47 generators, which is also a great achievement in itself."

Beyond enhancing electrical capacity, Fenaka has simultaneously accelerated projects to expand essential water and sewerage services across the scattered geography of the Maldives. In the past two years, 48 islands have been newly connected to clean water networks, and 28 islands have been connected to sewerage systems. Najah confirmed that an additional network upgrade is currently underway across 13 islands.

The corporation is also making strides toward reducing dependence on expensive fuel through ambitious renewable energy initiatives. Two major renewable energy projects are currently active, with 12 islands already completed and installation ongoing in 25 others. Complementing these large-scale efforts is the "My Solar" project, which has successfully installed solar panels for electricity generation in 187 islands.

These concerted efforts to integrate sustainable power sources have yielded measurable financial benefits. Fenaka reported a fuel expenditure saving of USD 311,284 in 2024, signaling progress in its goal to reduce the cost of electricity production.
