Speaker Abdul Raheem Declares Political Stability Unprecedented in Maldives Under President Muizzu

Two years into the presidency of Dr Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives has entered what the Speaker of Parliament, Abdul Raheem Abdulla, described as an unprecedented period of political stability in the nation’s history.

Appearing on PSM News’ ‘Hafuthaa 104’ programme to mark the government’s second anniversary, Speaker Abdul Raheem said President Muizzu had delivered on his campaign promise to end politically motivated punitive actions and establish a climate of stability. He maintained that the political environment across the nation now permits parties to operate freely and without interference.

A central claim made by the speaker was the cessation of political arrests under the current administration. He stated that no political figure has been detained in the past two years, a distinction he said sets the government apart from its predecessors. He also noted that developmental projects initiated by the previous administration have continued without interruption.

“There is currently no concern whatsoever in the political arena of the Maldives,” Abdul Raheem said, noting that parties are now able to function solely on the basis of their public support. “An environment conducive to conducting the political activities that each party desires has now been established in the Maldives. They are able to conduct their activities in accordance with the level of public support they possess. This is not something the government attempts to suppress or influence in any manner.”

The speaker identified judicial independence as a cornerstone of the administration’s stability. He argued that national progress cannot be achieved without an equitable justice system. He noted that President Muizzu has taken steps to strengthen the judiciary, ensuring that the goal of establishing justice is realised. “Where justice is absent, stability cannot prevail. Development cannot be achieved,” he said.

Speaker Abdul Raheem pointed to the judiciary’s budget as evidence of the government’s prioritisation of independence. “The level of prioritisation required to ensure the judiciary’s independence is evident even when examining its allocated budget,” he continued. “For a nation to progress peacefully along the path of development with stability, the most essential requirement is the establishment of a free and independent judicial system. This is precisely what the president is accomplishing.”

He also linked the ruling party’s legislative strength to its broader mandate for stability and progress. The People’s National Congress (PNC), which represents the current government, secured a parliamentary supermajority with the explicit backing of the electorate, he said, in order to deliver stability and development.

In light of this mandate, the speaker affirmed that parliament remains committed to cooperating fully with the government’s initiatives aimed at achieving stability and fulfilling the aspirations of the people.
