The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation has heralded the success of the government's newly launched sea-to-air cargo service, confirming that the strategic initiative has moved 3,617 tonnes of goods and contributed millions of dollars to the national economy since its inception.
Launched on 15 May 2024, the sea-to-air operation is a completely new service designed to streamline logistics and leverage the country’s extensive connectivity, mirroring successful models used globally.
According to data released by the Ministry, the period spanning 15 May 2024 through 7 November 2025, saw rapid integration and expansion. During this time, 17 international airlines connected to the service, facilitating the shipment of goods to two dozen countries worldwide.
The Ministry confirmed that the specialised service is a joint effort provided by the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL), with Turkish Airlines marking the first carrier to join the network.
The government has stressed that the high volume of international airlines already serving the Maldives presents significant opportunities for continued expansion of the transit cargo service, solidifying its role as a high-value growth sector for the economy.
