Nolhivaram Island, Haa Dhaalu Atoll, broke ground on Saturday on a sewerage network project.
The project was officially inaugurated by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim.
The sewerage network project of Nolhivaram Island was contracted to Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) on a design-and-build basis.
Speaking after officially inaugurating the MVR78 million project, Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim stressed the priority accorded by the government to establish water and sanitation services in the atolls. He noted that, since the government came to power, water networks have been developed in 12 islands, and sewerage networks have been established in 10 islands. He said the current government’s spending on such services is higher than that of any previous administration.

Providing details of the project, Managing Director of MWSC Ibrahim Fazul Rasheed said the project would see the development of an 18-kilometer long sewerage network, one sea-outfall and five pump stations, connecting 561 households. He said the works are expected to become fully operational mid-next year.
The project is scheduled to be completed by September 30, 2017. MWSC said Environment Impact Assessment of the project has now been completed, and that all materials required for the project have been transported to the site. The sewerage network, once complete, would cater to a population of over 2,500 people.
