The United Kingdom (UK) government has gifted the chairs used during the signing of the Maldives’ Independence Agreement on 26 July 1965.
The handover was formally conducted by Nicholas David Low, High Commissioner of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to the Maldives, and was received on behalf of the Government of Maldives by Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, in the presence of Adam Naseer Ibrahim, Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture and Heritage.
In his remarks, Minister Dr Khaleel highlighted the symbolic importance of the chairs, noting that they represent the moment the Maldives took its first steps as a sovereign nation.
He expressed deep appreciation to the UK Government for this meaningful gesture, which reflects the historical longstanding friendship and cooperation between the Maldives and the UK
High Commissioner Nicholas Low conveyed the United Kingdom’s continued commitment to strengthening Maldives–UK relations, highlighting the shared history and ongoing partnership across various sectors.
