President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday inspected the progress of the Rasmale’ land reclamation and beach protection project, the largest single initiative undertaken by the government to address the Maldives’ housing crisis.
The government is implementing the project to revolutionise the nation’s housing issues by reclaiming land in multiple phases across different sites. Work is currently ongoing at three different sites, with 100 percent of Site J already completed. Additionally, 25.53 percent of Site L and 20.09 percent of Site C have been completed.
The Rasmale’ Project is a key pledge of President Muizzu. Addressing the nation on the occasion of the Republic Day this year, he announced that 15,000 land plots from the Rasmale’ development would be opened for allocation within five months.
The President reiterated that the top priority in providing housing will be to families and individuals over the age of 18 who currently do not own homes. He said the dredging work is progressing rapidly and will accelerate further in December, with additional dredgers expected to triple the current pace of reclamation in Rasmale’.
The practical work of the Rasmale’ project in Fushidhiggarufalhu, Kaafu Atoll, started in December 2023. Rasmale’, spanning across 1,153 hectares, will be developed as an environmentally friendly eco-city.
President Muizzu was accompanied during the visit by Cabinet Ministers and senior institution heads.
